Dear Mike

I am sorry to hear that you have had two unpleasant encounters with dogs in the park. As the Friends of the Park we try to encourage people to behave responsibly and control their dogs and their children.

Of course we have no jurisdiction or powers over people’s behaviour in the park and have found ourselves in trouble when we have tried to intervene. Only yesterday when I was chatting to friends we saw one little boy pressing another boy’s face into the tarmac. When we protested we were told not to interfere and let the children sort themselves out. It seemed a bit rough on the smaller child but I suppose the parents want him to learn about life.

The park is NOT a dedicated “dog park” whatever that may mean, but the Council has acknowledged that the presence of dogs and their owners has in fact made the park a safe place. In the days when only a few people went there it was, I understand, quite dodgy and we are working hard to keep it safe and clean for all visitors.

Thank you for visiting our website and giving us feedback.

Best wishes
Mike Bosazza

It with great sadness, and some fury that I make the following statement/comment. May I initially mention that I am a dog-lover and a nature lover.

On Wednesday evening I was walking in the park when I was attacked by a medium size terrier. It snapped at me, and jumped up at me... and only after shouting out for the owner to identity themselves and call their dog did a gentleman shrugg his shoulders and half heartedly call the dog... the dog did not obey, and as I walked off it rushed me and jumped up at me and attempted to bite me... At this stage i decided I had to take a more aggressive stance, since aa couple more dogs had started showing interest... so I shouted and threw my wollen beanie at the dog, and chased it away.

I was angry that the owner acted as if I had provoked his dog by simply walking through the park.

Little did I know that the owner of that dog was representative of more of the dog owners who walk their dogs in this park.

This evening I was walking in the park near the fountain when two lab crosses rushed at me from the fence line where their owner was standing. They attempted to attack me, and I had to defend myself with a shopping bag... I managed to chase them off before I made my way to where the owner was standing with a group of other dog walkers.

This group acted like I had provoked their dog by walking in the park minding my own business about 75 metres away from them. One of the buffoon in the group made some comment about the dogs only trying to defend themselves.

May I again state that I am a dog owner, with a very happy and well looked after terrier bitch who has never even jumped up at a stranger, let alone try and bite them.

I recently read on a website (** that there had been some attacks on dogs recently? I dont believe anyone can justify an unprovoked act of cruelty or violence towards and animal.

Having said this, may I now give a statement of caution to dog owners who walk their dogs in De Waal park, that from tomorrow I will be armed with both a can of pepper spray, and a leather whip to defend myself against another attack.

To the two dog owners in the last two days who allowed their dogs to attack me: You are irresponsible dog owners, and it is you who should get the pepper spray in their face, but be warned that if another dog tries to bite me in De Waal park, I will defend mysel against you dog, and once I have defended myself, I will lay a complaint with the council and the SPCA and report your animals as viscious. You know who you are, you put Cape Tonians and dog owners to shame.

I had such a funny experience yesterday with a dog and a squirrel. The dog which closely resembled a fox, was crouching, ready to pounce on a hapless squirrel who seemed frozen, facing the wrong way and was close to being dinner! I shooed it up the tree and the expression on the dog's face was priceless! He cocked his head to one side with a look that clearly said "what the ** did you do THAT for"? He then barked angrily at me. It was so funny that I think a few people must have thought me quite mad as I left the park laughing out loud. It was tremendously therapeutic. What a pleasure it is to have this lovely park on our doorstep, espesially when one is living in an apartment!

My co-author and I would like to thank you for voting our Valentines entry the winner. My poem to Louise and Laurence was sincerely heartfelt. Unfortunately, the same day they polished off my prize and were too hung-over the next day to take me for my walk! Oh well, I have forgiven them already. You can look forward to me singing a song of love again next year.
